Please join us on March 13, 6 - 8 pm Second Saturday Concert . These concerts are a good way to support a worthy cause and at the same time have an enjoyable evening out with family and friends while listening to some good local music. We suggest a donation of $5 per person. So far, concert goers have been very generous and some go way over the top with their donations. We appreciate any amount and hope to see you in the audience on March 13.
The Music
Jimmy Falkner has returned to the Corvallis music scene with a basket of original compositions, inspired by jazz harmonies, Latin and African rhythms, and great melodic lines from a variety of genres. Having been in Arlington, VA for over two years without his piano, Falkner found himself relying more and more on the easily portable guitar. It was a mixed blessing because, although he did yearn to have his piano at his side, the separation allowed him to rediscover the magic of the acoustic guitar. Falkner will share with us his his original compositions, all played on his beautifully crafted acoustic guitar made by the talented luthier, Dave Thormahlen of Corvallis.
Looking no further than his own neighborhood, Falkner has joined forces with percussionist Dave Chiller to create unique arrangements and melodies and in the process, expresses himself anew. Chiller has been influenced and inspired by a variety of percussion instruments, styles, and cultures, including the Indian tabla and a new Swiss Instrument called the Hang. Corvallis area bands have taken notice of Dave Chiller’s talent. He's been playing around town lately with several local bands, including the Nettles at a Second Saturdays Benefit Concert last year. In addition to performing, Chiller teaches and leads rhythm and music programs with his organization Common Pulse.

From their website: "On January 21, 2010, with its ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the Supreme Court ruled by a vote of 5 to 4 that corporations are persons, entitled by the U.S. Constitution to buy elections and run our government. We believe this ruling is in error. Only human beings are people. Corporations are legal fictions. The Supreme Court is misguided in principle, and wrong on the law. In a democracy, the people rule. A recent Washington Post-ABC poll found that 80% of Americans oppose the recent Supreme Court ruling, Citizens United."
In his statement of dissent, Justice Stevens stated the obvious:
“. . . . corporations have no consciences, no beliefs, no feelings, no thoughts, no desires. Corporations help structure and facilitate the activities of human beings, to be sure, and their “personhood” often serves as a useful legal fiction. But they are not themselves members of “We the People” by whom and for whom our Constitution was established.”
Neither the Declaration of Independence nor the Constitution mentions corporations, which were rare entities at our nation’s founding. But thanks to decades of rulings by Justices who molded the law to favor elite interests, corporations today are granted privileges that empower them to deny citizens the right to full self-governance. They can do this by essentially “purchasing” elections. Most often, candidates receiving the most corporate money are the ones who win elections. If this ruling is allowed to stand, it will further erode our democracy.
