Please join us on May 9 for our Second Saturday Concert.

Three Fingered Jack
will play from 6-7pm.

As a young college student, fiddler Shari Ame won a scholarship to study traditional music in Scotland . It was this seminal educational adventure that eventually lead her to join up with other talented musicians who share a love for the music as unbridled as their love of the home hills. Three Fingered Jack has been delighting Celtic music lovers and dancers ever since. Joining Shari Ame and her fiddle are band members Bruce Marbin on guitar and a Greek stringed instrument called the bouzouki, Beth Brown with her soulful cello, and Laureen Urey who drives the beat on the Irish boudhran drum. The band mixes it up among the energetic and joyful jigs and reels and the often mournful ancient Scottish ballads, which Ame says are the oldest form of oral literature surviving in Western Europe.

The Nettles will play from 7-8pm

A band that Radio Scotland described as “Rimheach! [Gaelic for ‘Superb’] – The Nettles make it impossible to sit still.” This lively Celtic band plays a fiery blend of traditional Irish and American music. While their music remains solidly Celtic, sparks of modern individualism - with some rock, jazz and blues thrown into the mix - create a unique sound all their own. From Canada to California , from the Wintergrass Bluegrass Festival to the Oregon Bach Festival and even a wedding in the Opal Creek Wilderness, The Nettles have gathered kudos for their exceptional performances. Expect a musical treat with a mix of lively Irish reels, a few energetic jigs, old-time hoedowns and wistful ballads and waltzes. Band members include Laura Brophy on fiddle, Kevin Johnsrude on guitar, Michael Proctor on upright bass, and Dave Chiller on percussion.

The Beneficiary: Veterans For Peace

Donations will be used to make a bulk purchase of the small book, “Ten Excellent Reasons Not to Join the Military.” This book will be given to young people in the local area who are targets of military recruiters. Corvallis resident Adele Kubein wrote the chapter, “Reason #4: You May Not Receive Proper Medical Care.” Adele’s daughter was permanently disabled by injuries she suffered in Iraq as a member of the Oregon National Guard. Cindy Sheehan wrote the book’s introduction and also the chapter, “Reason #1: You May Be Killed.” Sheehan’s son was killed in Iraq as a soldier in the US Army. (note: Sheehan will be in Corvallis on May 27 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Church. She will introduce and read from her new book, “Myth America .”)
