A Benefit for Corvallis School District Homeless Students Program

Beneficiary - Children are the fastest growing number of homeless in Corvallis and the nation. This mostly invisible population doesn't necessarily live on the street. They may double up with other families, sleep on couches, floors, in cars, or possibly live in shelters. Homelessness for them, even if out of the elements, means they are not in their own safe, decent housing. There are around 200 homeless students in the district. Carolyn Hinds is the only Homeless Family Advocate serving the Corvallis School District's youth population. She interacts with homeless students at all school locations and works with a budget that is far from adequate. The goal of the Homeless Program is to keep children in their school of origin, even if the family's location changes. This provides children with some sense of continuity and security. Hinds is involved in enrollment assistance, on-going follow-up support, and referrals to health and social services. Monetary assistance is needed beyond the allocated funds, money for enrichment activities, transportation assistance, and basic needs such as Laundromat cards (one load of laundry can cost $3 - $5 to wash and dry). There are also personal needs, incidentals that add up, like tooth paste, deodorant, etc., things most of us take for granted. Your support will improve the odds that today's homeless children do not have to be tomorrow's homeless adults.

The Bush Pilots - a creative bluegrass influenced trio with Pete Kozak on banjo, mandolin, and vocals; Ron Benshoof on guitar and vocals; Rainier Farmer on bass. The band describes their music as “bluegrass with a twist.” The twist is the band member's musical personalities and awesome talent, combined with a love of the music. Whether they're playing their own original tunes or selected favorites of other musicians, it all comes together in fantastic harmony and supreme listening. Second Saturdays Benefit Concert Series is proud to have The Bush Pilots back on stage!
